Set up the sarebamail agent

Step by step: download the agent, start it and connect it to your account – for Windows, macOS and Linux.

How setup works

  1. Download and start the agent.
  2. Your browser opens the setup assistant on sarebamail.com, and the agent shows a code.
  3. Sign in if needed and check that the code in the browser matches the one in the agent.
  4. Click “Pair” – done. Your computer shows “Device paired – notifications are on”.
Go to download

Windows

  1. On the download page choose “Download for Windows” and start the installer – it fetches the right version (x64 or ARM) itself.
  2. Open the downloaded file. The agent sets itself up in your user folder without administrator rights and starts with Windows from then on.
  3. Your browser opens the setup assistant. Check the code and click “Pair”.
  4. The sarebamail icon appears in the notification area next to the clock. If you cannot see it, it is behind the “^” arrow.

macOS

  1. On the download page choose “Download for macOS”. The app runs on Macs with Apple silicon and with Intel, from macOS 13.
  2. Open the zip file (Safari usually unpacks it by itself) and double-click “sarebamail-agent”. If macOS asks whether to open the app downloaded from the internet, choose “Open”.
  3. The agent places itself in “Applications” in your user folder and opens at login from then on. If macOS asks whether it may send notifications, choose “Allow”.
  4. Your browser opens the setup assistant. Check the code and click “Pair”. The icon appears in the menu bar.

Linux

  1. On the download page choose the package for your system or add the sareba package repository – new versions then arrive with your other system updates.
  2. Install the package, for example by double-clicking it in your software manager, and start “sarebamail-agent” from the application menu.
  3. Your browser opens the setup assistant. Check the code and click “Pair”.
  4. The icon appears in the desktop panel. On GNOME this needs the “AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support” extension.

If something does not work

The browser did not open.
Choose “Pair…” in the menu of the sarebamail icon. The agent then shows a code; enter it on the “Pair device” page (link below).
The code has expired.
A code is valid for 10 minutes. Choose “Pair…” in the icon menu again to get a new one.
Windows or the browser warns during download.
The installer stays the same file across many versions; when it is new, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen may at first report that the file is not commonly downloaded (likewise for the program without installer). The publisher is “sareba Computer & Software e.U.”. In Edge choose “Keep” via “…”; if Windows shows “Windows protected your PC”, choose “More info” and then “Run anyway”.
No notifications arrive.
Allow notifications for “sarebamail-agent” in your system settings and check “Do not disturb” or Focus. The icon menu shows whether the agent is “Connected” and whether it is muted.
The agent says “Please sign in once”.
Your mail server password has changed. Sign in to sarebamail once in the browser and mail notifications resume.
Setting up another computer.
Install and pair the agent on each computer. Settings → Devices lists all paired devices.

Go to “Pair device”

Unpair and remove

  • Unpair a device under Settings → Devices; it then receives no more notifications.
  • Windows: in the icon menu turn off “Start with Windows” and choose “Quit”, then delete the folder “%LOCALAPPDATA%\sarebamail-agent”.
  • macOS: in the menu turn off “Open at login” and choose “Quit”, then move “sarebamail-agent” from “Applications” in your user folder to the Trash.
  • Linux: in the menu turn off “Start at login”, choose “Quit” and remove the package, for example with “sudo apt remove sarebamail-agent”.
